4's January Newsletter

January 2010

4-Year-Old Class Newsletter

Units

The month of January will be highlighted by two themes:  Good Health and winter.  During the month, we will discuss various ways to stay healthy, including eating the proper foods, keeping clean, getting enough exercise and rest, and wearing the proper clothing outside in winter.

Readiness

We will continue our study of the alphabet with primary focus on the letters Qq-Zz.  Pre-math skills will also continue.

Heart Treasure Chest

In conjunction with our Good Health theme, we will do a unit of study about the human heart.  The Heart Treasure Chest is a preschool program given to us several years ago by the American Heart Association.  It is an excellent program, especially geared to the 4 and 5-year-old child.  It includes the location, function, and description of the heart.  In addition, the children learn how to take good care of their hearts by eating healthy foods, exercising, and resting.

  Creative Dramatics

Our Dramatic Play Center in the readiness room will be transformed in January to the FDC Hospital.  If you have an "boo-boos," we can help you out!  Come to the FDC Hospital first!  We would welcome any equipment you could donate or loan to us, especially tape for bandaging.

Open House

Open House this year is March 7, 2010.  During January and February, we will be saving most of the children's art projects at school to display on that day.  We will explain this to the children, but you might mention it to them as well.  They will be able to take everything home after Open House.

Conferences

Just a reminder that our parent/teacher conferences will be held on January 22nd.  School will be in session that day.

Field Trip to ATA

The children will visit the ATA Martial Arts Academy in Seven Fields on January 27th to participate in a fun and physical workout to improve their motor skills.  WE will meet at the academy.  Parents are welcome to stay and watch their child.  Each session will last approximately one hour.  Permission slips and waivers will be sent home after Christmas break.

Emergency Room Nurse Visits

This month Jim Fetterman, RN, who is an emergency room nurse at Allegheny General Hospital will visit our school to talk to the children about how to stay healthy.  Both of Jim's children are graduates of FDC.

Name Printing

We will continue to encourage all of the children to print their names on all of their papers.  It would be very helpful if you could have them practice at home, too.  If your child has trouble holding a pencil or crayon correctly (3 point grip) please ask the teachers for a "pencil grip."  They are very helpful.  Please remember:  When you are helping your child print his/her name, capitalize only the FIRST letter and lower case the remaining letters.  ie:  David, not DAVID or david.
