February 2010 3's Newsletter
February 2010
3-Year-Old Class Newsletter
Units
Our major themes this month are good dental health, Valentine's Day, our community helper, the postman, and Open House projects.
Readiness
Readiness this month will include tearing, matching, counting, and stacking. The color this month is RED and RED DAY is FEBRUARY 9th.
In March, we will begin the MacMillan Whole Language Program with our three-year-olds. This involves using the Big Books, which encourage reading through rhyme and repetition. The children also will make puppets, which they can take home at the end of each month.
Creative Dramatics
The Dramatic Play Center will be transformed once again, this time from a hospital to a post office where the children will have an opportunity to practice their literacy skills as they send and receive mail from each other. A list of needed supplies will be included at the end of this newsletter.
Valentine's Parties
Our Valentine's Parties will be held on February 11th from 9:30-11:30 AM for the morning class and 12:30-2:30 PM for the afternoon class. The children will be exchanging cards. On the day of the party, please send in 25 cards with your child for the morning class and 12 for the afternoon class. The cards should be unaddressed so the children can distribute them without worrying about names. If they would like to sign their names or even put the first letter of their names, please have them do so. It's good practice!
Open House
Open House this year is March 7, 2010. During January and February, we will be saving most of the children's art projects at school to display on that day. We will explain this to the children, but you might mention it to them as well. They will be able to take everything home after Open House.
Roseann Lederer Visits
On January 19th, Roseann Lederer, puppeteer, visited. She did a special puppet show on good dental health since February is dental health month. Due to schedule differences, Roseann visited us a little early this year!
Field Trip to the Library
On February 18th, our three year olds will be traveling to the Cranberry Library for a field trip. They will take a tour and listen to a story read by the children's librarian, Miss Becky.
Materials Needed
We need post office supplies for our Post Office dramatic play center. Please consider donating ink pads, stamps, play money, postal scale, recycled greeting cards, stickers (not tiny ones), notes, index cards, tablets, envelopes, unwanted stationery, etc.
Name Printing
We will continue to encourage all of the children to print their names on all of their papers. It would be very helpful if you could have them practice at home, too. If your child has trouble holding a pencil or crayon correctly (3 point grip) please ask the teachers for a "pencil grip." They are very helpful. Please remember: When you are helping your child print his/her name, capitalize only the FIRST letter and lower case the remaining letters. ie: David, not DAVID or david.
